Winter's First Light

from $45.00

This photograph was taken on the last morning of the trip. We had just driven through the rock walls of Golden Gate Canyon after leaving Mammoth, and as we entered the high valley of Swan Lake Flat, the sky began to ignite. I can't remember seeing a color like this in my entire life. It was not a farewell, no it was as if the park were bidding me welcome, a great portent for the day ahead.

The image captures that fleeting event, known as alpenglow, as it washes the sky in an immaculate, soft pink. This first light illuminates the high, snow-covered ridges of Electric Peak, while the slopes and pine forests below remain in a deep, cool shadow. The vast, untouched snowfield in the foreground creates a sense of profound stillness, a quiet expanse under the colorful dawn.

A signature piece from the "The Quiet Expanse" chapter of "The Frozen Kingdom" collection, this print is a portrait of the sheer, quiet beauty of a winter sunrise in the high country.

Print & Medium

This photograph is defined by its delicate, ethereal color palette and the transition from the soft, pink alpenglow to the deep, cool shadows of the forest. To render this subtle gradient and the fine mountain detail perfectly, my premium paper choice is Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308. This 100% cotton matte paper has a soft, fine-art feel that will beautifully reproduce the soft, cloud-like texture of the sky. Its non-reflective surface ensures the delicate pinks are seen without glare, while still providing rich, deep tones for the shadowed pines.

"Winter's First Light" is offered in sizes up to 20x40 inches. Please contact me directly for custom sizes, framing, or other medium requests.
