I have always considered myself primarily a wildlife photographer, but this image marks a significant shift in my internal evaluation. We had stopped at the mud volcanoes, and as the rest of the group headed in, my attention was caught by something else entirely. I saw a wave of thermal fog beginning to roll across a stand of trees, and what was an incredibly brief instant in time turned into this photograph.

The image is a high-key study of that fleeting moment. Dark, slender trunks of pine trees rise from a deep snow-covered slope, their branches heavily laden. The thermal fog envelops the scene, obscuring the horizon and softening the background trees into pale, ethereal silhouettes. It is a moment of pure atmosphere, where the land itself is the subject, defined by the delicate interplay of light, snow, and steam.
