Water and Wood

from $35.00

This photograph was taken on the same incredible day as "The Miller's Path," during that rare time when the water was flowing at full force. After capturing the main cascade, I was drawn to the source of that power—the long, rustic flume that carries the water from the creek. I loved the raw, elemental feel of it. It's all just 'Water and Wood,' a perfect example of Appalachian ingenuity, slick with rain and covered in bright green moss. It felt like I was looking at the working heart of the mill.

This image offers an intimate, structural look at the historic John P. Cable Grist Mill. The long, moss-covered wooden flume, glistening as it channels the water, dominates the foreground, leading the eye directly toward the millhouse resting in the forest. The dark, wet wood contrasts beautifully with the vibrant, earthy carpet of fallen autumn leaves, creating a rich, tactile scene that celebrates the simple, powerful engineering that powered life in the cove.

A signature piece from the "Mountain Moods" gallery, this print is a perfect companion to "The Miller's Path," celebrating the rustic beauty and ingenuity of Cades Cove.

Print & Medium:

The textures in this photograph—the wet wood, the flowing water, the bright moss—are essential to its story. To bring these elements to life, my choice for this print is the Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta Satin. This museum-grade paper has an elegant, soft satin finish that is ideal for rendering the "wet" look of the glistening flume and the vibrant, saturated colors of the moss and autumn leaves. It provides deep, rich blacks and crisp detail, perfectly capturing the raw, elemental feel of the scene.

"Water and Wood" is available in sizes up to 16x24 inches. Please contact me directly for custom sizes, framing, or other medium requests.
