This photograph was taken on Lake Naivasha, during a boat ride in a motorized canoe. We were technically on our way to an island to see giraffes, zebras, and wildebeests, but for me, the journey was the true destination. The birdlife on the lake was simply amazing, and I honestly would have loved more time on the boat.

This African Jacana was the star of the show. It moves with a magical, light-footed grace that seems to defy physics.
