The Toss

from $35.00

By the time we reached the Masai Mara, I noticed the birdlife had changed. Unlike the lakes I had visited, the birds here felt completely foreign and wonderfully strange, like this Southern Ground Hornbill.

My guide had figured out by this point that I had a soft spot for birds, so we were having a great time finding as many different ones as we could, in between searching for the "splashier big 9." This was a perfect find. While I couldn't clearly see the insect it was tossing, the behavior was fascinating—this dramatic, ruffling, head-back fling.

We have one of these birds at the Atlanta Zoo, but I am so glad my first time seeing one, in all its dramatic glory, was here in the wild.

"The Toss" is a photograph of that strange and wonderful moment, a portrait of a bird that is both beautiful and bizarre.

A signature piece from the "Feathered Majesty" chapter of the "Africa's Primal Grace" collection, this print is a celebration of the wild's unique characters.

Print & Medium

This photograph is all about high drama, deep contrast, and vibrant, saturated color. A soft matte paper would completely flatten the impact.

Therefore, my choice for this print is the Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta. This is a museum-grade paper with a subtle, beautiful satin-gloss finish. This surface is renowned for its ability to produce incredibly deep, rich blacks (perfect for the ruffled feathers) while making the vibrant red and blue of the wattle "pop" with intense saturation. It’s the perfect medium to bring this dramatic, high-contrast scene to life.

This print is available in sizes up to 24x30 inches. Please contact me directly for custom sizes, framing, or other medium requests.
