Some days in the park are quiet, a long search for subjects that remain hidden. This was one of those days, with little to show for the hours spent searching. Then, as the day wound down, we saw him near Mammoth Hot Springs. This beautiful bull elk became a familiar, grounding presence—a reliable sight each time we traveled the park's north road, holding his ground with a quiet authority.
