The Lord of Winter

from $35.00

Some days in the park are quiet, a long search for subjects that remain hidden. This was one of those days, with little to show for the hours spent searching. Then, as the day wound down, we saw him near Mammoth Hot Springs. This beautiful bull elk became a familiar, grounding presence—a reliable sight each time we traveled the park's north road, holding his ground with a quiet authority.

This portrait captures him standing against a backdrop of dormant winter grasses and soft, falling snow. His gaze is steady, directed just past the viewer, conveying a sense of calm and resilience. The focus is on the intricate, powerful structure of his antlers, each point and beam defined. His dense coat, a mix of dark browns and pale tans, shows the subtle dusting of the snow, a testament to his endurance through the cold.

A signature piece from the "Winter's Sovereigns" chapter of "The Frozen Kingdom" collection, this print is a portrait of a steadfast and familiar guardian of the northern range.

Print & Medium

This photograph is characterized by its soft, diffused light and rich, natural earth tones. The texture of the elk's fur and the soft, out-of-focus background give it a painterly quality. To honor this, my premium paper choice is Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308. This 100% cotton matte paper is perfect for rendering the subtle gradations in the elk's coat and the soft, snowy atmosphere. Its non-reflective surface ensures that the fine details and rich textures are the focus, enhancing the print's quiet, dignified presence.

"The Lord of Winter" is offered in sizes up to 24x30 inches. Please contact me directly for custom sizes, framing, or other medium requests.
