The Lone Sentinel

from $35.00

Windmills are an iconic sight across the Texas Panhandle and New Mexico. I was looking for one that felt perfectly placed in its southwestern background, and to get this specific view, I had to stand on a picnic table by the side of the road.

This photograph, rendered in black and white, captures that lone sentinel standing over a vast, textured field. For much of the trip, the sky was either flat overcast or completely empty. This image shows how the right amount of clouds can add a sense of scale and depth to the open landscape.

A signature piece from "The Open Land" chapter of "The Great American Roadtrip" collection, this print is a quiet, classic portrait of the American Southwest.

Print & Medium

This black and white photograph is all about texture—the rough scrub of the prairie, the metal of the windmill, and the soft clouds. A glossy or luster paper would add a reflective sheen that would fight the scene's rustic, natural feel.

Therefore, my premium paper choice is the Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308. This is a well-regarded, museum-grade matte paper. Its soft, fine-art texture is well-suited for rendering the wide tonal range of this monochrome landscape, from the dark grasses to the bright sky. It absorbs all reflection, pulling the viewer into this quiet, classic scene.

"The Lone Sentinel" is available in sizes up to 24x30 inches. Please contact me directly for custom sizes, framing, or other medium requests.
