This fox was a flash of warm color against the stark, white landscape. I was positioned on a bridge, tracking its movement and expecting it to cross the road into an adjacent meadow. In a sudden, unexpected change of course, it decided to use the bridge instead, the very one where I was standing. The encounter became much closer than I had ever anticipated. For a few brief seconds, I was sharing the path with this magnificent animal, something I remain thankful for.

The photograph is the result of that encounter, a close study of the creature as it turned its head, looking directly towards the lens. The fine details of its fur are evident, with subtle gradations of red, orange, and white.
