Cathedral of Light

from $35.00

My job as the spotter was to scan for wildlife, but on this morning, my attention was completely stolen by the light. I was so amazed by the view that I told the group it looked incredible, but I honestly didn't think I could figure out how to photograph it. The challenge seemed immense. After a moment, we all agreed to stop.

This photograph is the result of that stop. The sun, low in the sky, breaks through a dense stand of pines, its light caught by the ice crystals in the frigid air. This creates powerful, distinct rays that fan out across the scene, cutting through the deep shadows. The trees, in dark silhouette, are transformed into the pillars of a natural cathedral, with the road on the left serving as an aisle leading toward the light.

A signature piece from the "The Quiet Expanse" chapter of "The Frozen Kingdom" collection, this print is a testament to the challenge and reward of stopping to capture an overwhelming moment of beauty.

Print & Medium

This is a photograph of pure, dramatic light. To render the extreme dynamic range—from the brilliant, sharp sunburst and ethereal rays to the deep, silhouetted blacks of the pines—my premium paper choice is Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta Satin. This paper is renowned for its ability to produce incredibly deep blacks (Dmax) while its subtle, satin-lustre finish will give the light rays a luminous, glowing quality that a matte paper could not achieve.

"Cathedral of Light" is offered in sizes up to 24x30 inches. Please contact me directly for custom sizes, framing, or other medium requests.
