Unamused

from $35.00

This portrait was born from a classic photographer's problem. We were at Lake Nakuru, and there were a couple of giraffes in the area, but the trees kept getting in the way of a clean shot. I had my long lens on, and if you've ever tried to photograph a giraffe up close, you know a full-body shot is impossible.

I was trying to find an angle when this one turned to look directly at me. In that moment, I realized the "problem" was the solution. Forget the full-body shot; this was the picture.

The expression was unmistakable. It wasn't curious. It wasn't majestic. It was, with flies buzzing around its eyes, simply... unamused.

"Unamused" captures that rare, humorous, and deeply relatable moment when the veil of "majestic wildlife" drops, and you see a pure, unfiltered personality looking back. This isn't just a portrait of a giraffe; it's a portrait of a mood.

A signature piece from the "Africa's Primal Grace" collection, this print is a surprising and intimate character study, and a favorite for the personality it brings to a room.

Print & Medium

To fully capture the incredible, intimate detail of this portrait, my choice for this print is the Hahnemühle Photo Rag. This is a museum-grade, 100% cotton paper with a subtle, fine-toothed matte surface. This non-reflective finish is essential, as it draws you into every tiny detail—from the individual eyelashes to the liquid depth of the eye—without any distracting glare. It gives the portrait a stunning depth and tactile feel, making the encounter feel immediate and personal.

This print is available in sizes up to 24x30 inches. Please contact me directly for custom sizes, framing, or other medium requests.
