This photograph is of a moment of sudden, quiet urgency. We had found a "grassy island" in the Masai Mara, a hidden crèche where lion cubs of at least two different ages were waiting while their mothers were away.

The scene changed instantly when a herd of elephants began to move into the area. Elephants are a profound danger to unattended cubs, as they will often try to kill them to eliminate a future predator. The cubs knew this.

As the herd approached, the young lions began to melt back into the tall grass, disappearing for their own safety. I focused on this little one as it made its retreat. "Soft Step" is a portrait of that vulnerability, a quiet moment of a soft paw on the earth as it walked back into hiding.

It was the last we saw of this young family as they vanished into the grass.
