There are countless opportunities to photograph the iconic shield painted on the highway, but this one, my first shot of the morning in Needles, California, was worth the wait.

This high-contrast, black and white photograph captures the bold Route 66 shield painted directly on the asphalt. Unlike many shields that name the state, this one reads "Historic," a word mentioned throughout the journey but now on the road itself. The image is defined by the strong, leading lines of the empty highway, pulling the viewer's eye through the desert landscape and toward a dramatic, cloud-filled sky.
