Frozen Face

from $35.00

By Yellowstone standards, it was a "warm" day for January, which is to say it was merely very cold. This encounter took place early on our last day traveling the North Entrance road. The bison, its face completely caked in ice and snow, seemed to embody the very essence of the winter, a living sculpture of frost and fur.

This intimate, high-contrast portrait is a study of that frozen mask. The image is filled with the bison's face, its dark eyes peering out from a heavy mantle of snow that clings to every hair. The deep, dark tones of its coat contrast sharply with the bright, crystalline ice, highlighting the harsh conditions it so quietly endures. A few frozen blades of grass, caught near its mouth, add a final, small detail to the scene.

A signature piece from the "Winter's Sovereigns" chapter of "The Frozen Kingdom" collection, this print is a direct and powerful testament to the resilience of life in one of the world's most demanding landscapes.

Print & Medium

This is a powerful, high-contrast black and white image, where the texture of the frost is just as important as the deep blacks of the fur. To honor this, my premium paper choice is Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308. This 100% cotton matte paper is ideal for high-contrast black and white images, as it renders exceptionally deep, velvety blacks while preserving the finest, most delicate details in the bright, frosted areas. Its non-reflective matte surface gives the print a tactile quality, inviting the viewer to appreciate every crystal of ice.

"Frozen Face" is offered in sizes up to 24x30 inches. Please contact me directly for custom sizes, framing, or other medium requests.
