A Curious Gaze

from $35.00

This was one of the most memorable moments of the safari. We were in the Masai Mara, where the "season of high grass" can make spotting wildlife a challenge. But that same grass provided the perfect cover for this: a hidden "grassy island" where at least five lion cubs were waiting, attended by older juveniles.

The group was cautious, and they seemed to take turns heading to the edge of the grass to survey their surroundings. After a while, the cubs would trade out. I was focused on this one, one of the younger cubs, as it took its turn on lookout. It sat up and looked out, its gaze directed upward—not at me, but at the world. "A Curious Gaze" is the portrait of that moment. It's not a look of fear, but of an innocent, inquisitive spirit taking in its surroundings. Seeing this hidden family was the highlight of that first morning in the Mara.

A signature piece from the "An Unspoken Bond" chapter of the "Africa's Primal Grace" collection, this photograph is a heartwarming portrait of innocence.

Print & Medium

To fully capture the intimate, soulful nature of this portrait, my choice for this print is the Hahnemühle Photo Rag. This is a museum-grade, 100% cotton paper with a subtle, fine-toothed matte surface. This non-reflective finish is essential: it draws you directly into the cub's "curious gaze" without any distracting glare, and renders its soft fur with a beautiful, painterly texture.
